Craig Shirley
Author of Reagan's Revolution: The Untold Story of the Campaign That Started It All
and Rendevous with Destiny: Ronald Reagan and the Campaign That Changed America

Our LPR Retreat theme "The Last Best Hope" is taken from a favorite Ronald Reagan quote; many of the same themes of several decades past are also the issues of the day: Carter-era malaise, economic insecurity and looming national threats. Craig Shirley's exploration of the political past and path of Ronald Reagan gives us fresh insight and strategies within our current political climate.

Craig Shirley is the author of the critically acclaimed bestseller Reagan's Revolution, the first book detailing Reagan's pivotal 1976 challenge to President Gerald Ford in the GOP primaries. Shirley is also president of Shirley & Banister Public Affairs, an influential government relations and marketing firm. He has written for the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the Weekly Standard, among other publications, and in 2005 he was recognized as the outstanding alumnus of Springfield College. Shirley and his wife, Zorine, divide their time between their homes in Alexandria, VA, and "Trickle Down Point" on the Rappahannock River in Lancaster, VA.

In Craig Shirley's other book, Rendezvous with Destiny: Ronald Reagan and the Campaign That Changed America, he tells the tale of Reagan's triumph. By tracing the path from Reagan's defeat on the convention floor in 1976 to his ultimate victory on election night in 1980, Shirley shows in gripping detail how Reagan's unshakeable hopefulness and conservative convictions led to a most unlikely presidency. Shirley explores the Gipper's underreported wilderness years (1976-79) and follows him as Reagan hones his message, assembles his team, and launches his bid for the White House amid the inflation crisis, the Panama Canal fight, and Jimmy Carter's era of malaise.
